It was stuck to a rock sideway, not moving. I gave it a little touch with tongs and still didn't move. Are there any signs you can distinctly see between a molt and a dead shrimp besides removing it? Use the tongs and pull it out to inspect. You'll know right away if it's just a molt or a dead shrimp. I used to freak out all the time cause I thought my blood red shrimp died but he was just hanging out under a cave after a molt. I will see what I can do.
When they are dead, would they still be clinging to the rock or just rolled over dead? It appears that it is just frozen in time. Unless you have a zombie shrimp if it was dead it would be rolled over on its side or stuck to a powerhead. They tend to hide for a day or so after molting That is odd for sure. Well, the "molt" or "dead body" is clinging to the rock. I hope it's the molt. Oh well Mine molts maybe once a month. They do need iodine to help with the process and this is typically replenished when you do water changes.
On the other hand, iodine is used by almost everything in your tank and skimming removes it as well. You'll hear this often though, it's also good practice not to dose what you can't test. If your parameters in in check and your shrimp is molting on a regular basis, I would be inclined to say things are going well. My shrimp molts and has been for the past year on a week cycle. Shrimp will definately molt under stress! I've seen it time and time again in shipping bags. With that said, what you want to look for is whether or not your shrimp are spawning. If they are old enough, you will notice a clutch of greenish mass in their swimmer fins under their tail.
When one spawns and lets those eggs loose, the other one will shed. Having shed, the 'shell' is soft for several days which allows the one that has not shed to impregnate the other one. They take turns back and forth being the female. Are you grossed out or entertained now? I leave the shells in the tank. You must log in or sign up to reply here. Show Ignored Content. How long does it take to grow a new shell? I am using Instant Ocean Reef Crystals so there should be a sufficient amount of calcium in the tank for it to grow a new shell.
What factors effect the time it takes to grow a new shell? What factors effect how often the shrimp molts? What can I do to speed up the process of growing a new shell? Feb 14, 1, 4 0 Somerset WI.
It should only take a couple hours for the new exoskeleton to harden up. And if I'm not mistaken, iodine also plays a big role in their ability to molt and regrow their exoskeleton.
