Can i have chickens in dekalb county

The DeKalb County Board voted, , during their Wednesday virtual meeting to send the amendment back to the county's planning and zoning committee following several voiced concerns from board members, including the amendment not requiring neighbors to be notified and everyone having a different definition of what a nuisance is.

The update comes after the committee previously discussed the ordinance text amendment last month. It would allow for residents to submit an application that would allow them to keep chickens on smaller unincorporated residential lots, provided they meet county setback requirements and they are not deemed a nuisance. County Board member Tim Hughes said he doesn't believe that putting agricultural animals in residential areas is a good mix. If the maximum number of hens someone could have on an unincorporated lot is ten hens as currently written, he said, the proposed 50 foot setback from residences could mean that could apply to a lot as small as a quarter or half of an acre — and those hens could yield 70 eggs in seven days on that lot.

Even if it had passed, most people would not have had yards big enough to meet the requirement. Can I have some cattle, pigs horses , ducks and some goats too??? If you allow one kind of farm animal you better be prepared to allow all of them!!!!

If your home has the acreage to sustain them, why not? Chickens require a pen…not a pasture. They are no more hassle than rabbits. You asked a question…people answered it. They make wonderful pets. People raised chickens for eggs and food, and they even had a small back yard garden, some people planted fruit trees for additional family food … there was no food desert in those days …. OMG, some even made their own wine. David Storey … thank you … as a young lad growing up there were NO stores close to where I lived..

We found everything that was affordable, as we lived with in our means. Chickens, a few deer, fish, side of beef straight from a farmer, and a good size garden. Sure helps people from being completely dependent on grocery chains and unnecessary government involvement.

How about quail instead. I think that this is wonderful. Property owners should be allowed to have chickens. They should also be free to have bees. Obviously, there should be some regulation and oversight. Homeowners should also be encouraged to have gardens and native areas in their yards, especially areas of landscaping to encourage natural habitats for pollinators and such.

According to county documents , no members of the public spoke against the proposal of having chickens on unincorporated residential property less than two acres large during a Sept. County officials said no roosters would be allowed on the property and the coops would be subject to inspections.

Further adjustments to the proposal apply only to properties within 1, feet of a boundary of a municipality that currently allows backyard chickens — which currently applies for Genoa, Shabbona and Sandwich — and the maximum amount of chickens that would be allowed at the property in question would align with nearby municipal regulations.

Derek Hiland, community development director for DeKalb County, said the amendment is written where if those neighboring city limits expand, that 1, foot buffer does as well. Jonathan Pope, the lawyer for the Muellers, said he connected with four area municipalities that allow backyard chickens in the last week. He said some common themes that arose during those conversations include only a handful of residents holding active chicken permits and having no issues or complaints about those license holders.
